About me...

I received my masters degree in museum studies at the University of Leicester in the UK last year. I am and have been an informational graphic artist and illustrator in the news industry for a number of years with a particular interest in natural history and medical subjects. I am a native (and future) resident of Massachusetts living in the DC area where I work part-time at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in the mammal collections. I recently re-curated the galago collections. Among my favorite museums: American Museum of Natural History (New York), British Museum (London), The Natural History Museum (South Kensington), Medical Museum (part of the Science Museum, London).
I am on the board of a newly formed state academy of sciences where I will be charting the course for its educational component as well as planning for its associated junior academy.

Nothing like a month old reply...I personally have only had to do bits and pieces for the medical galleries. We did some new video pieces on alternative medicine a little while ago. I wonder how many people find their way up there.

Michael: Perhaps Natural History Museums are not so underrepresented. Check out the collections management database you guys (NMNH) uses. The users of this database are overwhelmingly (well, probably not, but it seems like it) natural history museums. Of course, this database is ideal for natural history museums. The vendor has an annual conference each year along with a separate meeting for natural history museums. The user website / forum has many postings from natural history museums, which is not a bad thing, but they are definitely not underrepresented. I have talked to a lot of people at these conferences that work at natural history museums and just like I've always known, natural history museums are really cool. Lisa

Hi Michael:

Many, many years ago I worked for the Portrait Gallery. I love the Smithsonian (have lived in the Washington DC area all my life). What do you do at NMNH? A part-time job sounds sweet!

Hi Michael,
I luxuriate under the title of Creative Head of Interactive Media - I look after gallery mutlimedia and public-focused web interactions.
How about you?

Hi Mike,

How are you doing! Sounds like you are moving on up :) !
we just had our son and family over from Boston - too short a visit :( we are trying to move house, none too successfully, and can't really contemplate any visit to the USA until we have that sorted.

I've only just joined this site: it seems pretty slick - we can but hope that people join in discussions. I've opened up a couple of discussion groups and I see you have one open. How are you finding it?

Best,

Jerry

Hello Michael
My first Degree was in Graphic Design, specialised in Illustration, a while ago. Have now been fina Artist for some time, but still enjoy designing publicity for shows, i.e. postcards, catalogues etc. Been involved with museums for a number of years now, lived in Papua New Guinea and worked closely with the National Museum there and upon my return to the UK, become a bit of a specialist in Pacific Arts I suppose.
Visited the Natural History Museum last week again, loved it as always. Saw the Antartica exhibition, but adore the collection of birds! Took many photos of nature and display design to inspire with the content and presentation of my artwork. Often exhibit inside museums or in the grounds off. My personal website is being updated right now, buy please feel free to add a story or a line to my www.caravanstory.co.uk blog site

Bye

Julia
